most of the time when this happens its the 1st sign of a failing HDD - try reformatting it
If you can download a DOS boot disk from www.bootdisk.com and boot off of it, then run fdisk and wipe out and rebuild the partitions, reboot then type format c:/s to try it again
Or you can go to the manufacturer's website and get their HDD utility to do it...either way its real easy, if it does it again - you better not save anything important on it

verify and notice if the entire confusing force is formatted. It seems such as you in trouble-free terms have a ingredient of it formatted as in case you have been going to format it into partitons. And the clarification you have a 160HD that comes out to 147 is because of the fact the way a gig is measured. The confusing force agencies degree their confusing drives in 1000MB GBs, on an identical time as abode windows sees 1024MB as a GB. So confusing force agencies base their Gigabyte on Decimal and abode windows on Binary.

You probably have some bad sectors. You normallly lose some storage space due to formatting as the file system is installed, but not half the capacity. Run a disk doctor application or something like it to find out for sure.
