...you're talking about the macabre and dark-humored 1991 HBO mystery/comedy/fantasy, entitled "Cast a Deadly Spell"; it starred Fred Ward, as '40's gumshoe detective, Harry Phillip LOVECRAFT, a hard-boiled & disgruntled citizen, in a society where magic and witchcraft are used in tandem with technology. Lovecraft, who adversely abhores the use of magic himself, reluctantly takes a mysterious theft case, where he has to recover an ancient mystic book....namely the Necronomicon.
A 1994 sequel followed, entitled "Witch Hunt", and starred Dennis Hopper in the detective role.
Unfortunately, both films have yet to see release on DVD; you might find the out-of-print VHS tape on Amazon, or better yet, EBay.....

Maybe it's "Practical Magic" since the recent one is a remake. Or so I heard. Sorry, not much of a help
