That's not usually 3 separate trees.....it's 3 branches, coming from the same root.

3 of any plant looks better than 2.....and it looks fuller than one.

Sometimes a birch is a multi-trunk tree, often two or three trunks, but also Birches naturally occur in clumps or groves. So, when designing a landscape, it is natural to group Birches together. A Birch isn't a specimen type tree, nor is it much of a shade tree until they are very old. Their best use is in groupings.
Also, three is a good number in design. It is the smallest number of objects that establish a group or pattern. Often triangles are used when dealing with placement and color, and a triangle has 3 sides, 3 angles, 3 corners.
Basically, us designer-types think 3 birches look good!

A birch tree is quite thin and light... one specimen does not make a statement or impact as such. The rule of thumb is to go for odd numbers when planting groups of trees... 3 being the optimal for effect. It allows the triangular formation.. a very effective gardening rule for plants that may otherwise be 'overlooked'. A birch tree should never be multi-branched or pruned.

Birches, like aspens, reproduce by means of underground rhizhomes; thus, when you purchase a tree to plant, you effectively HAVE to get several trunks to allow the tree to be transplanted without killing it.
