I was anemic also. You can always go to your local pharmacy to find an iron supplement that isn't a freakin' horse pill!! If you were anemic before getting pregnant, then yeah, its pretty important that you take the supplement. Did your doctor tell you that watermelon has iron? It isn't as rich in iron as other foods, but it IS in there. Hang in there! Your baby will appreciate it =)

I have always been anemic and it's hard for me to swallow those pills. I took them twice my last pregnancy and stopped cause i gaged so bad i threw up and i was like aww hellz to the naw. Baby came out healthy and fine. Now that im preg again(5 weeks) and i know my doctor is just waiting to give me some more. But i cant do big pills at all. Eating high iron foods help but your doc may still give u some sort of iron medicine to take. Hope it's not the liquid that stuff is absolutely awful.
Good luck sweetie

there are many option to help you out. Just ask your doctor which option would be best for you. You can get a smaller pill that you may have take twice a day or maybe a vitamin shake or drink of some sort. You can also ask her which foods would be of the most help to you. There is a nutritionist in the hospital thatcan tell you best so you may want to ask your doctor where to set up and appt with them. The main thing you need to worry about for the moment is just getting as many vitamins as you can. The big pills are hard for a lot of women to take but most just blow them off as nothing, don't! They help your baby and your body throughout the whole pregnancy. Just ask your doctor what to do, theres always an easy fix for these kind of things so dont worry about it! Good luck and congrats!

Pregnant women are often anemic, but it doesnt mean you are. Those are normal symptoms in the first trimester. However, even if you are that wont damage your baby. Preggos are anemic because their bodys are giving all the minerals and vitamins to the baby, so thats why only the mother suffer and thats why women shcouldn get pregnant after giving a birth at least 15 monts (to recharge their body). If you are anemic, you will get some mineral pills that contains iron and everything is going to be just fine, your baby wouldnt even notice that sth happend:-)

I have always been anemic and was anemic throughout my first pregnancy. I also would skip those big horse pills sometimes they are just a big pain!! They would make me so sick also!! I would not worry if I were you!! You will be ok! My son was born very healthy! I had also wanted to change my vitamins but never got any that I actually would take. I finally just went to the store and bought my own OTC prenatal vitamins and they were great! Not too big and didn't make me sick. I don't know what state you are in, but mine were HEB brand (I live in Texas.)

As long as you take the iron pills- they are usually smaller than the vitamins- you will be ok. My iron was low throughout both my pregnancies and the nurse told me to have a bowl of whole grain Total cereal daily plus take the iron pills. That will give you folic acid plus iron.
(I did not like the taste of Total so I would drizzle a little honey over the dry cereal before adding the milk or mix it with yogurt kind of like you mix granola with yogurt)
Spinach is a great source of iron. If you do not like it cooked, put some raw spinich leaves or baby spinach in your salads each day.
As for the vitamins, if you cant take them, get a bottle of Flintstones chewables and take the adult dosage printed on the bottle instead of the horse pills.
Good luck and take care of yourself.

O.K., I'm a man, but my wife gave birth to 3 sons; every time she was anemic; each time worse than the time before. She could not handle those huge pills either.
Try to get it in liquid form, or ask the pharmacist to cut them in half. Some pharmacies even give you one of those (cheap versions) pill cutters.
Those things are hard! I cut them into, using a knife and chopping block, but that could tend to be dangerous!
But, by the numbers, most women tend to be anemic while pregnant. (How did the human race survive?)

Keep trying the pills, but you could make smoothies and add a raw, pasturized egg to it. You don't taste the egg. Cook as much food as you can in a cast iron pan of any kind (but not non-stick!). The acid in the food breaks down tiny bits of iron and you will absorb it that way.

I am the same way...I couldn't swallow those pills. What I did instead was drink the breakfast shakes. (like Nestle...even Slimfast or Ensure) They are loaded with vitamins and minerals.
