I guess the first issue is get permission, and talk about how open the parents are, or if it's an apartment, how much you're able to do.
It's unlikely you'll get any WRONG answers here. The question suggests that to everyone this is a personal preference type of thing.
PAINT is the first place I'd suggest starting, and as you say, household items? I'm not female, but have a daughter. Her ideas were valid, and accepted throughout her childhood. It may have been my house, but it was after all, HER ROOM, her sanctuary, her place to hang out and enjoy those things in her life with a sense of privacy, ownership, security; and her rooms were decorated, or accessorized with things she most enjoyed and/or used.
For years her hundreds of plush animals filled every ledge in the room, as well as posters, candles, statuary, TV, stereo, pictures, and full closets (Smile)
If you're allowed the freedom, talk with your parents about what you'd most enjoy doing, They may even be very helpful in the process.
The good news; most especially for young people; is that our "tastes" change; sometimes frequently; allowing that everything can be changed; even your personal spaces.
