Go to www.grisoft.com and download AVG Free.
Also www.CyberDefender.com and download Free 2.0
Also www.lavasoft.com and download Ad-Aware.
All of the above are free. The only one you should have on start up menu and running in background is CyberDefender. Run the other two manually every few days.
Also, better to run these in Safe Mode - tap F8 as booting up and choose Safe Mode w/Networking.
Good luck

All the following programs are FREE.
They offer Full Time (Active) Virus Protection
If you do not have active virus protection, install only one. All are excellent.
Free AOL Active Virus Shield (powered by Kaspersky)
http://www.activevirusshield.com/antivir...
AVG Antivirus 7.5 Free Edition
http://free.grisoft.com/freeweb.php/doc/...
http://www.download.com/avg-anti-virus-f...
or
Free antivirus - avast! 4 Home Edition
http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.ht...
I recommend going with AOL Active Virus Shield because it uses the Kaspersky engine to update files.
The Kaspersky Anti Virus engine has proven on many tests to detect the most virus' out of all anti virus programs out there free or not free.
I have used all of these myself and the program that seems to work the best is AOL Active Virus Shield.

The long and short of it is this
Many of the Internet Service Providers offer this service FREE. Two that come to mind SBC.
Roadrunner. and many others.
Computer Associates offer a free download of there software.
Here is the key, rarely do they offer any virus or trojan removal service with Free Software.
McAfee and Norton Security Suites both offer removale software.
