Every time I get a paycheck the government takes some of my money for taxes. The tax on each pack of cigarettes is almost a buck. Then there's sales tax. I don't own a house yet, but when I do the government will tax that too.

I have to work for my money ... why shouldn't the government have to do the same? They think they can just take it.

Yes, our tax system is broken.

We have to pay taxes for services that the government provides, such as roads, police, military, etc.

A lot of tax money goes to entitlement, such as various welfare programs.

I would like to see a "fair tax" where there is a national sales tax on everything we bought. No tax on money we save, only what we send. We could abolish the IRS, and make the who system much easier.

No. But I would support reducing taxes TREMENDOUSLY! Taxes must go for roads, protection, fire, police, etc.

But to reduce taxes would take reducing pork. Reducing waste such as our tax dollars paying for a transvestite beauty pagent. (disguised as an AIDS awareness event) Or mating habits of a snail. (because the Bruneau Snail is on the endangered species list...and we do not have enough species of snails on the planet)

You would be shocked at what our taxes pay for. If we could just start slashing everything that is not necessary for govt. our taxes could be cut in 1/2 and the deficit gone at the same time.

Chi guy...you are so off base. Currently the bottom 1/2 income earners pay 0.00 income tax. I paid nearly $100,000 last year. You think that the wealthy do not pay taxes, and you are nuts! With a flat tax, my taxes would go down, and most people's would go up. Oh, and the wealthy would support and benefit the most from a flat tax.

Pluto...you would see so much money fly over seas immediately...including mine. I pay enough in taxes!

I am sorry but no government can function without some form of taxation. Should taxes and the size of government be lower? Most certainly, but you are always going to have some taxes.

Create a flat tax of 10 to 15 percent with no deductions and require the size of government cut in half.

I think people should have a choice to pay tax or not. You can opt out of using any government program, government supported infrastructure or anything that requires their use.

Of course this would mean you could never drive on a highway, use electricity or telephone, go to a hospital, expect police or fire department assistance, no food you didn't grow yourself.. but if you want to go live in a cave and not pay any tax, more power to you.

the society in which you live is, economicly speaking, based on the rights to "life, liberty, and property".

no taxes would mean that there was no organized government to defend your rights.

So, unless you're the biggest, toughest, meanest bully going, no government would mean that your personal economy would collapse and you'd be unable to ask questions here.

It rather follows that 'no taxes' only works in games and fantasy land.

***
you'll do better to ask which taxes result in the most of whatever you find desirable.

for some, that is income equality, for some that is economic opportunity. Rather obviously, the one camp wants high taxes and the other low.

***
As for government "earning" its income, please recall that government is usually the most inefficient producer of any good or service -- it follows that government could earn an income only by monopolizing the field in much the same way the post office monopolizes the carriage and delivery of first class mail.

First I would like to see the government only involved in the things we as citizens can't do for ourselves like the military etc. Then I would like them to raise only the money they need to fund that using a National Sales Tax. I like the NST because it picks up all those who work under the table and those involved in illegal activities, where other methods miss them. And it should be a small percentage if they would close down the unnecessary programs.

No.
Your question is really stupid.

How and who would build run and regulate the infrastructure and services you use and live in without taxes?....waterlines, roads, electricity, police, firefighting, airflights, professional licensing, national defense...etc etc.....wanna give private corporations the rights to public access, eminent domain and pricing for all these things?

BTW the government can't take you taxes from your paycheck without your permission. You can tell your employer to pay all your money to you and pay your taxes yourself at the end of the year. If you can qualify for deductions etc you might reduce your taxes greatly....for example your milage driving to and from work.

The Govt. isn't a person, it can't go out and put in a full 9 hours of work to get minimum wage. Sure cigarette taxes are OUTRAGEOUS but that's only because they want people to stop smoking so they tax the f*** out of cigarette companies.
It's not as free as people make it seem to live in America and it's not as great as people make it seem either, but the fact of the matter is we are a democracy and we all have to work for our country while our country does nothing but provide protection and SOME medical services for us. It sounds feudalistic, I know, but until we can get it changed that's how it's going to be.

Chi. A flat tax with 0 deductions would crush the midle class only. The Rich would have less incentive to invest and the poor would probably be exempt.
The Middle Class, losing a Mortgage deduction would be catatrophic.

Taxes are a necessary evil. How do you think those roads you drive on to work every day are built? How do you think the public school system gets money to pay faculty? The answer is taxes.
