Its helps us find things easily, it puts all things that are similar together and with the system ranging from kingdom/domain to species things become more and more distinct and different.
We like order and with so many species around it makes sense to try and organise them into some type of order. So we name things ( with binomial names...2 names a genus and a speices name) and this tells us straight away what a species is realted to and helps us "put things in perspecitive".

It very useful and although by no means perfect, has made life a lot easier for anyone having anything to do with taxonomy.

When we can classify species, we identify those that are closely related to each other. Extending our classification scheme, we identify genii that are closely related to each other, and so on as we get more general. In this way, we get perspective for where a certain species is within the scheme of things.
