Does your retail copy of XP have SP1 or SP2 on it, if not, then the max that will detect on a format is about 127 gig. But you should still be able to see the rest of the hard drive if you right click My Computer, choose manage and click on disk management, there should be unpartitioned disk space that you can use, it will be on a seperate drive letter, but at least you will have all your disk space.

The best way to solve your problem is to make a fresh install deleting the old. Install WinXP SP2 to utilize your 250 GB Hard drive. Former versions will not support more than 127 GB.

doing this would delete your recent windows installation.
but I dont think, any there is any other way out............
TRY THIS,.......
get the Disk Manager of your HD company
run it frm the DOS.... for this you would require a 98 bootable disk and run it at the bios startup, i.e. when your computer starts.
The disk manager utility clearly shows all the partitions of the HD. reunite the partitions and check the HD capacity now, it must be 250 GB. You might have possibly installed the windows on other partition.
for HOWTO about disk managers read the DM user file at your HD company website.

you can always go back and reinstall windows and format the HD. Also remember that even though a HD is advertised as 250 GB, it is actually only about 244 gb. When they advertise a HD they estimate that 1000mb is equal to 1gb. But, in reality, its 1024mb for every gigabyte. But, sounds like you just installed two partitions since you've lost that much space.
