Well, you are going to probably have to decide what kind of riding you like to do. Starting off on a dirt bike will have set you up well, for handling any emergency manevers you might need on a ligh weight street bike. If you liked playing in the dirt, something on the sporty side is probably going to appeal to you more than a cruiser, but that just depends on you.
I'd start out on something like a used Suzuki GS500, or a Kawasaki Ninja 500. They are great to get the hang of street riding on. Take a motorcycle safety course, just to get use to the "rules" of the road if nothing else.

Depends on what sort of bike you want. For a sport bike, look at the 500 cc and under, or the 650 cc two cylinder bikes (SV650, Ninja 650, Ducati Monster). For cruisers, probably up to 800 cc (or the 883 Harley Sportster) would be all right.

could try a dual sport like a Kaw 650, BMW GS or find a Suzi S40. Large single cylinder engine would be sort of like the dirt bikes you're used to perhaps, handling would be familiar. depends some on what you plan to do with it- commute or long distance touring. A BMW GS650 is the single- the GS 850 and 1000s are older twins.

I was exactly like you last summer. I road off road for years but never on the street. I just decided to get what I always wanted. I got a brand new Harley Davidson Dyna Wide Glide. Best decision I could have made. I love it ! Go get the bike of our dreams !

I have owned both Harley & Yamaha. I have nothing against Harley's but the Yamaha V-star is very dependable and probably cost less. You can get either 650cc or 1100cc as 1st street bike. Larger engine models are also available.
