Yes, you can do preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD). With PGD, after the eggs are fertilized and the embryos have several cells, one or two cells can be removed from each embryo and scientifically analyzed. The chromosomes can be examined, and the gender of each embryo can be determined. If a parent only wanted a girl child, if there are any female embryos, just those would be returned to the womb and the male embryos could be frozen, given up for "adoption" to another couple, or disposed of. PGD can cost between $2000-$5000 in addition to the regular cost of an IVF cycle.

The technology exists however most doctors consider it unethical and will not allow it. Also in some countries it is illegal.

Also one must consider that they do not select the sex of the sperm. They just don't use they embryos of the undesired sex. All methods of determining the sex of the sperm have a failure rate. Usually around 30%

You can since chromosome studies are done on the fertilized eggs before they are implanted, but doctors dont suggest that you only implant one sex, because there are only so many good fertilized eggs and you dont want to decrease your chances. Not only that, but most couples when they are at the point of In Vitro don't care about the sex.
