So, I bought this goldfish, just one of those little 25 cent guys from the pet store. Although he is a goldfish, he was brown...up until about two weeks ago, then he completely transformed and now he is a gold goldfish! Why did he change colors like that?

Several things can cause a color change like you saw. One is age and another is the color of the gravel in his tank. Lighter colored gravel will cause a dark goldfish to take on lighter colors.

Also, it's possible that the original brown colors were from damage, like ammonia burns that were healing and once completely healed, his true gold color showed through.

It is a pool comet, they change colors, and usually end up completely gold, or red and white. It is totally normal. By the way, they grow to 12" and can live for decades.

baby goldfish are brown because their color protect them from being eaten by other fish. as the fish grow older (mature) they will change color (white, orange, yellow - depends on the pigments).

It probably happened because of change of tank...it may have adjusted well to it, and is liking it there..
