I, for sure, believe in the modern definition of 'vampire.' That is, someone who- for whatever reason- cannot sustain their energy levels on their own and are forced to seek outside sources. There's many theories for this, such as a person's aura/chakra/energy field being 'wrong' or damaged somehow, trauma from accidents or illnesses. It's not really that far-fetched.
Now, as for traditional vampires... I'm not going to say I -don't- believe in the legends. There very well could have been a race of long-living, nocturnal folks at one point that simply got malalligned (fear of the unknown and all) and vilified. Who knows? I don't know everything about myself, let alone every other thing in the universe, and believe it or not, neither does science. I've decided to keep an open mind about things rather than automatically dismiss it as impossible.
I myself fall under the modern definition of 'vampire,' of the psychic variety. For whatever reason, I have always lacked proper energy levels, no matter what I ate, drank, how long I slept, excercised, worked, etc. All medical tests come back relatively normal, save for a high ANA level, and all psychiatric evaluations are average. (Mild depression, anxiety disorders, common stuff these days.) However, I switched to a nocturnal schedule and learned how to tap into other energy sources, and *tadaaa.* Problem solved within a matter of -days.-
But like every subculture, organization, etc, you're going to have nutters. Abortion clinic bombers, terrorists, people who think they're physically four thousand years old and can turn into fog. Don't judge an entire subculture based on a few people who have other issues. =P

Hi sweetie,
No it doesn't mean that your a fish, just closed minded. Every legend, myth, or mystical creature has it's bases in reality. Meaning that quite possibly it exsisted at one time. The human mind is smart enough to create stories like this on it's own. Just because you can't see it or don't believe in it doesn't mean its not real.
and yes they would be considered vampires because they drink blood. Vampires can be physical or spiritual. A blood drinker or and energy drainer. Blood harbors our life energy, that is why vampires drink it, to achieve a higher state of being. Over the centuries they have gotten a bad rep. Now I am not in any way a fan of vampires, but when your as old as me you know alot.
so open up your mind fish-boy, you may be supprised what you find.

Myth. However, the field of vampirology is complex and mysterious. There are many aspects to the vampire phenomenon, and they would require several books to fully explore. One aspect of vampirism which frequently troubles magickal, spiritual and other small groups, the most common form of vampire, is found among living people who share with us the benefits and disadvantages of physical existence on this plane, yet are not quite human. These people appear on the surface to be somewhat eccentric members of society, yet their outward idiosyncrasies only hint at how different they are from those around them.
Each of us incarnates for a lifetime with a certain way of relating to the physical world through the vehicle of our physical body. A vampire is a person born with an extraordinary capacity to absorb, channel, transform, and manipulate "pranic energy" or life force. She also has a critical energy imbalance which reels wildly from deficit to overload and back again. This capacity for handling energy is a gift, but the constant imbalance of her own system is the cause of the negative behavior patterns and characteristics which may be notable about a vampiric person.
Real vampires do not necessarily drink blood-in fact, most of them do not.

It would make a person life so simple if what you stated is true... Yes people still exist with your above named problems... But in truth Vampire and werewolf's do exist.... I and not about to sit here and tell you how I know that they are real.... But the truth of this situation is that they do exist...... Now I don't fault you for your belief... And I really hope that you never run into any such creatures for your entire life-time... But the real truth is that they do exist and they exist in a number that will surprise you and all other non-believers.................... And the truth is something that will make itself known when you least expect it to.. Also all governments on this earth do have special groups of hunter that really hunt these creatures down and destroy them and what I am saying is factual...... And your lack of belief will not make these things just get up and go away...............................

The vampire myth also came from people who were thought dead, but were actually in a coma.
when grave looters would go into the grave, they would notice fingernail scratches and blood hands, from the waking victim
also the vampire myth came from people like me with hematodipsia.
we are people who have a thirst and longing for blood.
those are where myths came from.
our actual existance is secretive, so of course you wouldn't know much would you?
weren't expecting to find one of us here were you?
asking a question about our legends.
we are here, but we are respectful of others beliefs.
we also like to show ourselves when least expected to.
it makes it all the more fun.

Vampire bats drink blood and do a lot of the things that you mention. Not known for eating livers. They are vegetarian/fruitarian. Many myths and legends about things that happen in the dark. Why do I like the dark?
