Cuttlebone/turtle bone is white and the hard backing needs to be removed (the side you cannot put your fingernail in). You can use a veggie clip (looks like a clown fish) to attach it via suction cup to the side of the tank.

This is what I use: http://www.petco.com/product/6124/Lee-s-Classic-Vegi-Clip.aspx

Taking your turtle outside is not sufficient UVB. You will need to get a UVB bulb along with a heat bulb for them to synthesize the calcium from the cuttlebone which is necessary to prevent Metabolic Bone Disease (MBD). The basking area should be 90 degrees heated by a regular bulb with a more expensive UVB bulb in a seperate clamp lamp/fixture a foot away from the basking area. Reptiglo 5.0 and Reptisun 5.0 are good bulbs and are cheaper online..usually by a lot, though I have seen the Reptiglo 5.0 for $13 in Petsmart but online is usually cheaper...

They are supposed to be exposed 12 hours a day to the lights, 30 minutes a week is not sufficient when they need over 70 hours a week..and the artificial lights are very good. 30 minutes is a joke...wow.

Good luck.

Whether you have a land turtle (boxie, wood), tortoise or a freshwater turtle, all you need to do it peel off the backing as much as possible with a knife. They can't eat the hard backing. Then you break it up and toss it in. They'll find it and nibble away. Be sure to provide some vitamin D3, or else the calcium alone is useless. The best way is bring your turtle outside for 30 minutes a week for some supervised basking. 30 minutes of natural sunlight will provide more UV rays than a weeks worth of artifical UV lighting. Good luck.

Cheers,
JJ

You don't attach it. You stand it up in one of the corners or lay it flat and allow them to chew on it.
