Salt Lake City Utah looks like a great layover location for a road trip I am planning, but I'm not finding anything worth stopping for. The tourists sites list only malls and musuems but I can shop anywhere in the US and the museums are not that unique. Is there any interesting attractions a tourist sites might not have listed that is worth checking out? I'm not planning to make a stay out of it so even if we just use the town for a hotel room one night, what is worth looking at to kill time?

We found Salt Lake City to be quite beautiful, with snow-covered mountains overlooking the city. A visit to Temple Square is a good idea, just to see the flowers and architecture. We saw the Mormon Tabernacle Choir tape a TV show inside the Tabernacle, and it was quite beautiful.

The Kennecott Copper Mine is about a half-hour out of town. It's the largest such hole in the world, visible from outer space. The size of the equipment is pretty breathtaking. Not a typical tourist attraction, I know, but memorable in its own way.

Temple Square is really cool, and can be a quick stop or longer if you prefer, but a must. I don't know what tourist sites were listed, but just south of Salt Lake City is the world's largest open pit mine. I am not kidding, its the largest hole you will ever see! Literally. You can't find that in any other state or country. It is called Kenecott, aka Bingham Copper Mine. The machinery they use is HUGE. It is probably a 30-40 minute drive from downtown Salt Lake City, with a $5 charge per vehicle (not person). If you think it sounds dumb, you're wrong. Check it out. I believe the visitors hours are 8 am - 8 pm, roughly, 365 days a year. Probably the greatest, underpublicized site in Utah.
