Not to beat around the bush, but your question isn't specific enough. Since this is the board game section, I will assume you are asking about Monopoly.

In the game of Monopoly, much as in real life, if you have competition then your profits are limited. If you own one railroad, and other people own the others, you can only charge $25 for a ride. If you have a monopoly, then you are the only guy in town that people can buy from, and you can get away with charging $200 for a rail ticket, or $2000 for a night in a hotel at Park Place.

Monopoly is 90% luck. Rolls and card drawing is luck (which consists of half of the game). Deciding what to buy is the only skill. And buying everything you luckily land on is the best thing to do. Not a deep thinking game or a good simulation of life. If you want strategy, play Chess.

The goal in board games is to win. In monopoly you must create monopolies to charge higher rents. To do this you must be competitive in buying properties and trading properties and building up properties. If there are no monopolies, then no one wins and the game will go on forever.
