is this a window a/c or a central air unit....either way if the change filter light is on this means that something is causing the motor to pull to hard to get air through your evaporator coil.....if you just recently changed the filter or cleaned it then it is possible your a-coil or evaporator coil needs cleaning....there is no danger from getting sick from the freon unless it started leaking out and then the unit wouldnt cool it would start freezing up first and then eventually it would not cool at all....on a window unit you can take the filter out and clean it with warm soapy water then let it dry out and replace it...on most central air units you take the filter out and replace it with a new one...you can clean the a-coil with a soft brush and a water hose...just take the unit out of the window take it outside and spray the coil with water..do not spray water on the controls..let it dry out and reinstall it in window...

I'm having a hard time telling what filter you're talking about, but it sounds like you're talking about the heating and cooling unit with a high DP indicator for the air filter. If that's the case, then Freon is not an issue, you can't filter Freon out, plus your standard home unit dosen't have enough freon to do you any harm, unless you are touching the pipes by a leak (you might get frostbite) or if you smoke due to the break down of freon into phosgene gas, a highly toxic gas that causes bleeding in the lungs (smoking is bad around Freon). If he changed the air filter for the AC unit, he may have used a HEPA type or high efficency filter. The problem with high efficency filters is that on some units they restrict too much air flow due to capacity of the blower. If that's the problem, just go back to the cheep filter that costs two bucks and it should clear the light. If the old filter was really dirty, you might pull the filter and look for a port just inside the filter casement, that is the low pressure sensing port for the differential pressure transducer. run a damp Q-tip into the port and see if the light clears. some times if the filter was really dirty, a dust bunny will get stuck in the port when you change the filter, and give you a bad indication.

The filter is there to protect the indoor air conditioner coil and the blower motor. You won't get sick if you never change the filter, but it will eventually get so clogged with dust, hair and moths that your machine will shut down.

The filter button may be lighted because your uncle did not know how to reset the button or timer. It is nothing to fear, just ask him to check the filter to make sure it is in correctly.
