It will be hard to correct that. For an admissions essay you should try explaining you've been very involved in school but just got swept up in the b.s. and intend to work hard if accepted into this school or any school. You'd have to get A's in every class to raise that GPA and it'd probably move into the 2. range, 2.0 or higher. I'm sure there have been some accepted with that GPA but it won't be a Harvard or even state university. You should raise your grades to the 2.0 level or higher, apply to community college, get some really good grades in there, and then transfer to a university if you'd like with those better grades because the college will only look at the college grades then and if you do well it will be like you've always done well.

I don't know what you mean by a "great college" but there is definitely no way you are getting into any top college with a 1.78 in your Jr year. The Jr year is the most important one that college admissions guys look at. You blew it!

OK, so now what? You have to prove that you can get good grades or no respectable college is going to touch you. If you take some tough courses as a Sr and get pretty good grades, then I think a lot of medium level colleges will possibly be willing to give you a chance. You will have to convince them. But if you do a mediocre job Sr year, then you are headed for Community College. That will be your last chance to show what you can do. If you go to CC and get anything less than excellent marks, your dreams of a "great college" are dead.

There are a million kids who claim that they could have gotten good marks, but the colleges don't want to hear it. They want some proof. You have to give it to them.

Good luck. Don't make the same mistake twice.

Don't lose hope! You need to put your gear in drive now--start with classes...you need to work hard and study hard. I suggest getting some extra help if you need it. Tutor might be a little overboard but ask you teachers for extra help.
Speaking of, get a teacher you trust (or counselor for school) and explain your situation. They have tons of insight that will help you.
Then don't forget to devote time to extra curriculars...community service, volunteering, clubs, sports, ect.
You need to get good grades on the SAT for sure! If you can afford the classes, check into those or study from book material.
In your admissions essay, explain that you learned from your junior year the most. It taught you to work harder and get serious-- they might like it if you showed how you bounced back so do well senior year. In your junior year, did you just goof off or was there something that held you back that you have now overcome? Focus on the progress you have made.
Stay focused and start looking at colleges. Talk to people in the field you want to go into and STAY DETERMINED!
Good luck, you will be in my prayers
