Basically a Leiden jar is a type of capacitor and can be charged like any capacitor, but it is not very efficient.
A static electricity generator is the typical source of electrical energy for charging a Leiden jar.

I don't recall using salt water; we just put a foil cover inside and out. Anyway: to charge it you hold the outside thus connecting to ground, and you touch the probe section that sticks up thru the lid with a charged item. The charged item is typically the comb briskly swept through hair, glass rod rubbed by rabbit fur, that sort of thing.

You have a rod full of static electricity. You touch it to the metal top of the jar.
