My husband is from Hungary and he prefers to remain isolated from everyone he came to America at the age of 17 and has been here for 15. He just seems so miserable. He says all he needs are me and the children, but I think he'll be happier if he made some friends at least. He has no other family here

It can be hard if there's nobody else in the community who's also Hungarian. But, if you have kids then they are probably the best agents of assimilation for immigrant parents. Kids will bring home from friends or school new ideas, and will serve as a gateway through their activities to understanding American culture. I would suggest that your husband get to know the parents of your kids' friends as well as your kids' teachers. Taking an interest in your kids' friends and education will give him a conversation starter and he might even turn neighbors into friends.

Sometimes it's better not to have friends as you can't really trust anyone and most will stab you in the back anyway. Maybe one friend might be good for your hubby; someone he can trust and grow to have loyalty with.

I find that not having many friends is more of a peaceful lifestyle for me as most are just, in the end, not friendly material. One good one is a good thing though. Maybe take him to a kingdom hall? At least he'll be around people that love God and will love him also; a big spiritual family. He can trust them more so than say just any old person in the world.

It can be difficult, but i think it depends to a large degreee on the new culture (I changed from anglo to latin at age 16 and couldnt be happier).
Get your husband to explore his interests, hobbies, languages, etc The more people he meets the easier it will be to make friends, the first times will probably be tough, he'll need a lot of support from you, but after that it will just get easier.
good luck!!!
