I clean houses and offices. There is one house I clean that uses a canister vacuum and I feel like I am getting a work out. The vacuum I have in my home is an upright. The attachments are on the back and it is durable but light to push and it has automatic adjusting when going to a different height of carpet. I think the Simplicity is one of the best on the market and that is what I use in my home and my brother has a cleaning business which I help out and that is what he uses too.

I have done janitorial work for over 20 years and have used a lot of different brands and I personally like an upright vacuum.

Depends on what you are vacuuming. I prefer an upright on carpeting and a canister on bare floors. Many of the uprights have a hose attachment for corners and bare floors but they are very clumsy to pull around when using the attachments.

I have always heard it's the canister vacuum is the best.
But I find them not as convenient to use and prefer the upright vacuum.

I agree with PDY, the upright kind are great for large carpeted areas and such, but they are clumsy when it comes to using the attachments and the hose and doing stairs. I prefer the canister over the upright because it makes doing stairs easier and it's a much cleaner process when you have to empty it-just change the little bag. (I know a lot of people hate the bags, but these are easy- a little notch slides in, tuck the edge in and you're done)

Uprights are best for just about any surface. I use mine on my hardwood floors. Canister vacs are ok for stairs if the hose on the upright isn't long enough
