I’m sure there is a lot of debate about this, but when do psychologists believe fetishes begin – are they rooted in early-childhood experiences, or are they just “innate”?

Please people!
Yes some fetishes do come from a persons child hood just as do bad habits. And others form way later in life.
First you must define fetish and know the persons attraction to it. Each person with that fetish would be scored a level 1 to 10 on how much they are consumed with the fetish. You will find a the degree a person in groups with the same fetish very widely. and asking people when they came to realize they had a fetish towards something takes place at different times in life.
Take thongs as being a fetish, and lets make our person with this fetish a 45 year old man. Were thongs worn as they are today, did he grow up as a child seeing them being worn??? Were they in any publications, on tv, movies? Not even bathing suits of his adolescence were cut as a thong.
Anywhere, anytime, by anything or anyone can a fetish start!

Fetishes seem to take root in early childhood and adolescence...This is where they take root though, and they may not appear for several years.
During the early stages of puberty is where a lot of sexual and attraction fetishes begin for most people.

I have a rope bondage fetish and I am pretty sure it started when I was an adult, when somebody introduced me to it.
As far as remember I had no traumatic experiences of being tied up as a child, in fact I remember only one occasion. We sailed a lot, but it came never to my mind that all these ropes could be used for something else than rigging the sails.

I don't think you will get any real answers here. Some fetishes begin in early child hood and I don't think you can get back that far.
