Like most things in the news, that was a "fad", in my opinion of course. Fads can be good or bad. I think when scientists found out about the bird flu spreading a little more in avian species than usual, the media went crazy over the discovery. There was also the fact that a person got sick from bird flu, which never happened before.

Every year or two, usually around February, the government and media come up with some new potential pandemic to whip the Chicken Little crowd into a frenzy. The government hands out enormous sums of money to favored businesses and creates a bunch of jobs for their cronies. Then, when the threat loses its effectiveness, they just put it on the shelf with SARS, the swine flu, type A flu, AIDS and dozens of others over the years.

The Flu virus changes every year so we will see another flu virus.

The problem with the bird flu is that it was too likely to jump the species barrier. Bird flu is still out there and it could hit again, but as time passes it is less likely to be a problem. Still something like it could come up again.

One theory has it that AIDS started in African swine and jumped the species barrier and look how bad that turned out to be.

Yes the fact that it jumped from chickens to humans is a scientific concern but to be crass more people die from drunk driving, pneumonia and host of other reasons compared to 124 worldwide since 2003.
