i had a small bichir in with 6 zebra danios and a baby zebra danio. i recently changed the fish food i was feeding my fish and my bichir attempted to eat one of my danios. the danio got away but its scales are sticking up and some are falling out. a few days ago i came home to a dead bichir with a dead danio stuck in its mouth. i read that bichirs wont eat fish that are bigger than their mouth, but in my case that wasnt true. and even if he was hungry, why didnt he eat the baby danio?

Sometimes they will try to eat something that is just a bit too big and it can get stuck, just as in this case. He probably didn't get the baby danio because it was too fast for him or just stayed out of the way.

Sorry to hear about your fish.

I had a 6" bicher catch and partially swallow a baby red-tail catfish. Unfortunatly the catfish didn't survive. The catfish's head was wider than the bicher's body, which is why I thought they would be safe together. I was actually worried that the catfish was going to eat the bicher. Bichers are predators, and fish eat fish.

It probably thought it was smaller than it mouth. but the danio probably just got stuck in his mouth so the eel couldnt breath.
