You have to put him in the mix. Mickey Cochran, Johnny Bench, Gary Carter and lets not forget Mike Piazza, come to mind as well. Cochran had the best offensive numbers of all. Bench was so great defensively it is criminal. If you look at offense combined with defensive stats, Mike Piazza and Ivan Rodriguez are tight. I would go with IRod because he might have a longer career. That is what puts you into the Hall of Fame. Like it even matters at this point. Both guys are stellar players.

cathers? heh. lol. yes, i'd have to say he is. There are catchers better than him of course, but he is a very good player. he is great defensively, having sole possession of the highest percentage of runners thrown out at second or third for the last four years, and among the least in passed balls in the last five years. also, offensively he is a threat, for a catcher or otherwise. and way more so than some of the other catchers in MLB. he has been a valuable offensive pawn for detroit. so yeah, i gotta say that i would include him on any list of all time great catchers.

Absolutely. A career batting average of .303 mixed with 12 Gold Gloves for defense and a couple of World Series appearances is a pretty good resume just for starters. The man will be a Hall of Famer.

Of Course he is!
A 14 time all star (all as the catcher, other catcher started at 1st base) and he has caught 2,000 games. Only 3 other catchers have caught that many games or more (gary carter, bob boone, carlton fisk). He is the youngest catcher to reach 2,000 and still has a few years left in him.

He is going into the Hall Of Fame on the first ballot.

Don't know who you're talking about.. There is a Ivan "Pudge" Rodriguez that is a catcher for Detroit who's pretty good and consistent and has been to a couple of world series, to boot.

Of course he is.

I happen to think he is THE best, but as long as he tends to stay within most peoples' Top Five with the occasional diversion into the lower half of a Top Ten, that's okay too. Amazingly good player.

I think Ivan Rodriguez's career will live under the cloud of steroid abuse. I don't think it's a stretch to believe he was doing something, particularly early in his career. If you see him now and compare him to earlier in his career, the difference is striking. Numbers wise, he is probably one of the ten best all-time, but I think it will take a few ballots to get him in.

He will be there and probably pass the likes of Bench, Bera, etc. He is not only a great catcher but can also hit and run if need be.

Rodríguez is one of the best catchers ever. 12 glod gloves, highest % of throwing out runners in 40 years(not even close) above .300 lifetime ave. top 5 all time.

It depends on your definition of "one of the greatest". Rodriquez is definitely in the top 20 all-time catchers and one of the three or four best playing today. Even though he is in the downside of his career, any team would love to have him.
