they don't hand out free upgrades just for showing up. try the 20 trick, it might work, it might not.
people are under the impression that hotels give out free rooms and hotel rooms just for showing up. you must gamble to get these perks, and it usually involves hours at a table, or slot machine

One way to get a free upgrade is to book directly through the hotel. Go to their website and click on the promotions link (most hotels have this) and there are usually free upgrades. I just booked a trip to NYNY by going to their website, clicking on promotions and got a free upgrade from the standard Skyline room to a Park Avenue Deluxe room along with 2 for 1 breakfast, 2 for 1 roller coaster passes, and 2 for 1 drinks.
Another advantage of this is if you see the price decreased you can cancel your reservation and book it again at the lower price.

I remember for my 21st birthday Ceasar's Palace upgraded us from deluxe tower to premium tower room. Unless you have an special event going on, they wouldn't upgrade your room!

slip a twenty when you check in. you have a great chance of an upgrade at that point, if you ask.
