Avenged Sevenfold is emo, not rock. And yes, there are a lot of poser "rock" bands out there today. I can't help but laugh in the face of My Chemical Romance, Fallout Boy, Green Day, and Disturbed. All of the bands I listed are considered rock, but shouldn't be. If you want an example of rock you need to listen to Led Zeppelin, AC/DC, Steppenwolf, and Guns & Roses (there are a lot of good classic rock bands out there).

Rock always has guitars and never has 5 guys singing at the same time.

When I first heard the term of rock - not rock & roll, it was associated with bands like the Who, Zepplin,Grand Funk Railroad,War,Queen,Hendrix,Nazareth,Santana,Aerosmith,AC/DC and others - loud, well played, guitar driven music.

It has to do with the beat. Any music originating from R&B/tribal witch doctor music. The term started because a DJ made reference to kids "Rockin' and Rollin'" in the backseat of a car to that type of music.
