By getting the 4GB option, it will cost me $800. Is it worth it to get that memory? I don't think I'm going to be doing anything that will use up that space, but I would also like the laptop to last me four years in college. Any advice?

Yes, go head and invest into a 4GB, for college, it will be worth it. Not only will it be worth the memory space; cause time stops for nobody; [trying to load a document when class started 20 minutes ago], When you may have trouble, tech support will tend to help you more/better because you invested that extra money. IT'S WORTH IT. If you happen to get the 2GB, best thing about that is you can always upgrade.

If the laptop is new more than likely it has "vista" on it..ewwwwww lol..there is alot of problems with vista right now and alot of computers seizing up over it...Vista takes one gig to just load and operate the program...and 2 gig is recommended if your going to run it...Personally if it said it had vista on it, I would call dell and see if xp was availablefor it, and might even get a credit on the price due to this...but the operating system you get is your call, if it is affordable I would go ahead with the 4 gig therefore not having someone later on charge you 200.00 or more to upgrade it for you..If your finances are low/limited and the extra cost will be hard on you go with the 2 gig...even if it's vista you want, the extra gig of memory is a bit more"hmmmph"..so look at your pockets and dig deep, see what best fits your budget.

2gb is plenty of RAM, but if at all possible (within reason) get the 4gb. It never hurts to have more RAM. My college laptop has 2gb, and it runs vista like a dream (save for the graphics, but that's the fault of my graphics card, not the RAM). I usually have a gig and half free for other things when I'm running my computer. More RAM will only make your computer faster, and allow you greater flexibility with future software, but I assure you, 2gb will be plenty for the next four years.

It will cost you $800 more to go with the 4GB option?

Wow, Dell is getting more and more bold when they are ripping off their customers. You can get 4GB of top of the line ram for probably no more than $300 on your own.

I would suggest you start with 2 gigs, and just add more ram later on down the line when the price comes down.

4 GB is complete overkill. Save your money. 2 GB is plenty.

Also, see if you can buy the Dell laptop with Windows XP instead of Vista. XP's memory requirements are much lower.

Go with the 2GB. it will save you money and when ram becomes cheaper you then can upgrade 2 the 4GB or by a new Laptop. and the 2GB is also good becasue i have 1GB in my desktop and i can burn DVD's be on msn, play music, and be on the internet and it still fast. so imagine what you can do with 2GB!

If the 4G RAM is that important to you I wouldn't buy it from Dell. There prices are still way to high on RAM. Current RAM prices are very cheap.

I would buy the PC with whatever if comes with in the "package" and upgrade it myself. Installing RAM is very, very simple and how to do it is defined in your owners manual or you can ask on here if you need further help.

You can go to these web sites after you get the PC and run their memory analysis tools. They guarantee what the recommend will run perfectly in your PC. Here are the sites.

inless you plan on opening 400 programs at once then 2gbs should be fine, the bad thing about dell is that the memory speed is usually 533MHz rather then 667MHz that you would expect on a gaming laptop.
