Dear Sludge-

There are several products on the market that will help remove this material. One is an Engine Cleaner that can be installed directly into the Crankcase. Ironically it is made by the GUNK corporation.

Be aware though, this material is very high in detergents. I mention this because after the application you may start experiencing oil leaks from the seals and gaskets.

My advise is to remove it slower than in one night.

You can do this by executing oil changes every 1000 miles for the next couple of months. If your vehicle requires 4 quarts of Motor Oil, replace one quart with a quart of Marvell's Mystery Oil and run the engine as normal. The Mystery Oil will loosen that crap up and get it to flow into the oil. Every time you change the oil and filter, you will remove that junk.

Removing all of that stuff at the same time, can cause engine damage. More than likely the "Sludge" is an improperly installed Oil Treatment solution like STP. Most folks buy that "Snake Oil" and don't bother to read the installation instructions. This material if not installed properly will not flow into the oil like its supposed to and incorporate properly. So is sits in the low spots in the Cylinder Head, Engine Block, and Oil Pan collecting metal, soot, acids and other goodies that are harmful to your engine.

It was probably installed because the car started to burn a little oil, and a friend or poorly educated Parts Monkey was trying to help the poor sod. So its actually not his fault. What is his fault, is not changing the oil every 3000 miles like he should have.

Once you get the engine cleaned up, and running good again, pick one particular brand of oil and stick with it. Changing brands of oil to suit what is on sale is also a good recipie for sludge build-up. And, the previous owner may have been one of those people.

As long as the car is still running good, you can help your new purchase, by changing all of the fluids, servicing the transmission, and giving it a good Tune Up.

My bet is that, if you show the car a little over-due TLC, it will last you for many years to come.

Good Luck!

The sludge is there because the oil wasn't changed often enough. Any good mechanic will know what to do to clean it out.

Use a high detergent motor oil. Valvoline has the most detergents of the major brands.

If your mechanic has opened your engine and he/she knows what they are looking at, then they should be able to advise the procedure of what has to be done.
