There are many, many versions of the legend, but here is a basic summary: Arthur is the son of Uther Pendragon and Lady Igraine (from Avalon). Uther Pendragon was King, but put his own desires above the common good of his kingdom. With the help of Merlin, he fathered a son (Arthur) with Igraine (who was already married and had a daughter, Morgana; thus Arthur is Morgana's half-brother). Merlin realized (a little too late) that Uther was not fit to be King, so Merlin thrust Excalibur (sword from The Lady in the Lake) into a stone and proclaimed that only the one true King would have Excalibur (meaning the true King would be able to pull the sword from the stone). With Excalibur gone, Uther lost his protection, and was killed.

Merlin feared Arthur (Uther's infant son) would be targeted by Uther's enemies--so he hid him away. Years later, Arthur pulled the sword from the stone and was recognized as the one true King. During a "rites of passage" Arthur slept with one of the priestesses from Avalon (turned out to be his half-sister Morgana--although Arthur wasn't told, that union produced a son, Mordred).

Arthur married Guinevere, founded Camelot and introduced the Round Table--a table that had no "head" (no "head of the table") to represent that he and his Knights were equals. The King and the land were one--and all were at peace.

After learning of a betrayal of his best friend Lancelot and Guinevere, Arthur fell into a depression, and the land and the peace faded. In an effort to regain his power, Arthur had his Knights searched for the Holy Grail. The Holy Grail was the cup that Jesus Christ had drank from at the Last Supper. Josepf of Aramathea brought the Holy Grail to Avalon for safe keeping.

Most versions conclude that Arthur was killed by Mordred (his son/nephew) when Mordred attempted to take the throne. Upon Arthur's death, Excalibur was given back to The Lady in the Lake for safe keeping--until the new, one true King would emerge.

P.S. Many, many movie versions that don't do the legend justice.

King Arthur was a boy who became king by summoning the sword from the stone, which not even the strongest man could pull out...why? Because the sword waited for Arthur to come along. Any way he became king and supposedly ruled during the late 5th and early 6th century. It is unknown wether he was real or simpley a fictional character. He married Lady Guinevere and he and his knights kept order in Brittania.

There are just to many version about King Arthur and his Knights of the round table.... You have to remember that King Arthur really goes way back in time and records and writing were not always kept intact.... There are even stories that say that King Arthur may not have been in England.. They say that he was located in Eastern Europe like where Yugoslavia was once located...... There is just nothing that can be found in writing that can assure anyone that his exploits happen in any manner... But Romans writing does say that he did exist.. But what were his accomplishment no one really seems to know............................................

It's based on a Welsh king, Camelot is supposedly to be based in Glastonbury. The purpose of the round table is to up hold medieval chivalry. Lancelot is the traditional prince charming, who won Genevieve's heart (love at first sight), Arthur did have a nephew & son named Mordred via Morgana Le Frey (some say she is his sister), who attempted to take control of camelot, but died by Arthur's hands. He (Arthur) went to the legendary place called Avalon. This is a famous quote he made right before he died: "I am the past & future king" it is said when the time is right he will return. As for the holy grail it was retrieved, but can not remember who did it.

There are too many different versions...none of which have been proven to be factual.
What aspect of the legend are you looking to find out about?

The most recent archaeological findings, and probably the closest story to the truth, are portrayed in last year's movie "King Arthur"-the one with Keira Knightley
