Surprisingly, of friends and acqaintances, from teens to adults - if I presented to them in a kind, gentle way that their usages of 'like...like...like' was unbecoming of them -- Most admit that it is just a bad habit of their speech patterns. Once pointed out to them though, most, if not all, with actually very little effort, did manage to change this annoyance and eradicate it from their speaking patterns all together.
Suprisingly, the UMMs are a little harder to overcome. The most famous one of these people is Ted Turner, former CNN Mogul and Mr. Jane Fonda.
Turner's a billionaire; and yet whenever he's interviewed on camera/radio, every few other words out of his mouth is Uh or Umm....
Granted he may not be a public speaker per se; however he didn't become one of the wealthiest men in the world by keeping his mouth shut at all!
So if stuttering can be overcome by people who go onto carreers as great public speakers -- Then perhaps Teddy Boy should invest a few of his bucks into working with a good professional speech therapist to better get over this annoying habit as well.
Suprisingly too, like and UMM, is actually worse when it's combined with the over usages of the F-Word!
Sure, in common terms among common friends, I use the F-word as well. But not on a consistent basis where every other word is Like, UMM, F-Word, etc. etc.
Suprisingly, observationally speaking, black comedians versus white comedians use the F-Word with aplomb. Over and over again, and quite frankly, a lot, if not most of it is worthless and unfunny at that.
Surprisingly, this was a good q too!
Thanks for reading!
Like, UMM, take care, eh?!!

I do invision stuffing something in their mouths. Maybe they should think before they speek. It might help out with all the dead space in their heads while thinking of an answer.

I would never want to do that to anyone unless they were being rude or mean, hateful or just talking down right nasty.I deal with alot of people like that everyday and I have to tolerate alot worse than a little like and Umm's.
As a matter of fact one of the most intelligent people I know and she has a photographic memory does this alot. At first it did kind of annoy me, but I understand her now and I love her for who she is.I've noticed a lot of intelligent people actually do this.

They're okay, most of the time they are just nervous and the words um..like.. gives them a time to think, for some people it's another method.

I loathe the word "like". Umm is totally natural to me. I say it.

Often. It's a space filler because they are talking faster than their brain like works.

They are probably not aware they are doing that, they may need speech training, such as Toastmasters, to help then deal with that issue.

I start keeping score in my head of all the 'like' and 'um's ...
Home: 67
Visitors: 64
It's close game here at the arena, 'Like' fades back, passes to 'Uh' ... Oh! The ball is stolen by 'Ah'. He throws it to 'Er', back to 'Ah', over to 'Mm' ... He shoots ... DENIED!!!
