The circumstances are different and the timing is different.
What the Allies did in Germany and Japan after WW2 would probably be impossible today because politicians would be demanding the return of all American troops to the USA and demanding that they "let them sort things out for themselves."
In that scenario it is highly unlikely that Germany and Japan would have developed the way they did.

Terrorists are not a nation, not confined to a single geographic area and although they claim to be Muslims, they are not typical of most Muslims.

The nearest group that I, as a historian, can come up with is the Nihilists who were a nuisance in various parts of Europe in the 19th and early 20th century. They planted bombs, shot heads of government and other political figures, destroyed important buildings. Of course, they were less sophisticated than today's terrorists and did not have modern technology to help them. They were mostly rounded up and dealt with or finally realized the stupidity of their ways.

However until Muslim communities start "policing" themselves instead of turning their heads in denial these horrible acts of butchery will continue.

And to the person who said "the west started it," you are 100% WRONG. Terrorism by extremist Muslims has been going on for a long time and is merely a continuation of their original plan, begun more than 1500 years ago, to make the entire world Muslim, by force if necessary. Read history!

(By the 8th Century Muslim armies had overrun North Africa, the Iberian Peninsula, the Balkans, parts of Italy and South Eastern France! Later, in medieval times, the Ottomans picked up where the others had left off and advanced as far west as what is now Austria! It took many battles and huge
loss of life to push them back. Internal problems in the Ottoman empire thankfully helped destroy it from the inside)

Many people have made some very valid points, especially regarding history. We must also remember that the terrorists would like us to react against the innocent Muslims, this would then create the separatist divide that would propel these extremists to a higher level, other than just a minority group. Internment is a crass idea, that would cause more support for terrorist acts. As others have pointed out talking is the only option, again if you refer back through history war and oppression cause resentment, which unfortunately gets passed from one generation to another, the saying history repeats itself is a very good analogy. Here in the UK we have such a multi-cultural society it would be a shame to regress instead of progress, don't you think? I have three children, and I teach them to understand different cultures and attitudes, we are not all the same. My brother-in-law and his family were at Glasgow airport that day, we have spoken to them, they are not frightened or raving on about internment or revenge, they choose to live their lives, as they have always done, as we should all. Unfortunately there will always be bad people, and it does not matter what colour, religion or political beliefs people have, every society has a different understanding towards things. But it is up to us as parents and citizens to address these issues and balance them out.

We did indeed incarcerate [sending to holding camps] all people in UK who were either German or of German descent, to camps on the Isle of Man. Some were sent as far away as sunny Oz, as though they were being transported, like back in the 18th century or something.

Included in the bunch of bad folk who were interned throughout the war, were the Italians. A mate of mine was sent with his parents to the Isle of Man in 1940 and did not return to the mainland until the end of hostilities. Their crime? Being fourth generation Italian and likely to be a member of the Fascist party of Italia.

There's a movie about this on TV [think Saturday or Sunday] starring Bob Hoskins - it explains everything. Not sure what time the movie is on or it's title. Check out your TV magazine. It's FREEVIEW terrestrial anyway.

Edit: examanter above makes a valid point. Not only that, but apparently these 'doctors' were rejected by the health authorities in Australia as being not well qualitied enough. Makes you wonder just how much the NHS cares about we the British financiers of same. Operation anyone?

You'd rate the 'News of the World' over the 'Guardian' i suppose? Who exactly is the idiot here?

You want hospitals and doctors, but everyone in Britain wants to watch the football and read about Posh and Becks. Well, that means you are not producing enough doctors because you're soft and dumb... so you have to import them.

Terrorism is a big-picture problem but terrorism is not, statistically, a threat to you. Stop living in fear and stop looking for instant, easy answers... Brits have to start being smarter and learning to be doctors, and terrorism has to be faced up to with enlightened foreign policy and precise policing. That's how you dealt with the IRA and all the other groups in the past. It works, but it requires mental discipline.

You don't get that by reading the 'News of the World'.

Terrorisim in Modern Britain is NOT a new thing .. and I don't recall ALL the Irish being incarcerated during the 1970's.

You really want to alienate those innocent Muslims living in the UK... ?
Why are you wanting to punish them?

By all means string those responsible for terrorist attacks up by their miniscule testicles, dip them in honey and hang them outside a brown bear's cave...

but the innocent NEED to know that any bulldust the extremists tell them about Western People is just that BULLDUST .. by incacerating the innocent you will just create more bad blood and create a more resentful youth..you need to get these innocent people ONSIDE .. NOT off-side

We are NOT at war with the indigenous terrorists though are we? And besides it's not like they go around with a sign saying I am a potential terrorist.

No we need to find the preachers of this madness and incarcerate them. One word NUT CASES the lot of them.

How can you justify trying to harm innocent people an eye for an eye who's eye are you fighting for not yours that's for sure.

Religion what a nightmare! This is why I do not believe anything spouted by people with agendas be it Priests Imans Rabbis you name it.

What nobody seems to have noticed is how incredibly inept the recent attackers were. I only hope their NHS operations were a bit more efficient than their terrorist ones!
