Everyone answering the question are completed false and have no idea of academia or academica degree qualifications. I doubt any of them are professors and or have a doctorate or have taught at a university before.
First, a professional degree is lower than a research doctorate (Ph.D) but higher than a masters (M.A or M.S). Professional degrees are not regarded as doctorates in the same since as a Ph.D or an Ed.D. Its a practitioners degree. No research or publishing training at all.
Then, the title of Professor or distringuished Professor has nothing to do with the degree. There are distinquished professors with only masters and in one case I know of B.A degree.
One can obtain what is called a Docent, which is higher than a Ph.d and is normally given in European countries such as Germany. Docent are higher than the Ph.D and gives extra research and teaching training in an subject area.

In Medicine there are post doctorial specialty degrees which is a Diploma. D-IM Diplomate inInternal Medican, D-S Diplomat in General Surgery. That's 4 additional years of study under supervision and a test.
There are also multiple doctorates. Isaac Azimov, for example, has like the entire alphabet behind his name. He's got PH D in Physics, Chemistry, Doctor of Science degrees Masters Degrees in Biology
There are also post graduate Fellowship programs that have stature.
Of course there is the Nobel Prize, being a Nobel Lauriate is something to write about after your name
There are also Chairs at Universities that are prestigious.

Nope. You can have several doctorates, if you want, but doctorate is the highest. It can also outrank a medical or law degree since it takes more time to obtain a doctorate (mean of 6 years rather than 4) and requires original, publishable research.

In the United States? Not really. Technically speaking, the title 'Professor' outranks the title of Doctor; in the New York State system, you can hold the title of Distinguished Service Professor, which is theoretically higher than even full Professor.
I know in England, they offer what is called 'Letters', which is given to distinguished PhD, etc, etc, and is a higher academic rank -- but one that cannot be earned via education.

The PhD is the highest academic degree. It is considered a higher degree than all other degrees (including MD, JD, DDS, etc).
