My girlfriend just got her results today and got a 17 (ouch). How bad is that?? Do you think she can get it up to a 26, that is what her advisor said she needs that and she is a shoe in. What do you think?

Also I don't think she studied as hard as she should have, I think she thought she would do a lot better since her whole life has led up to this point. She has ALWAYS wanted to be a doctor and has been in the field since she was 14, now 22.

That score is kind of low... Medical school is really competitive, and people with scores in the twenties have trouble getting in. If she were to work hard, I am sure she would pull that score up, but tell her to aim for a score in the thirties. If she wanted to be a doctor all her life, then she should also have the motivation in her to study and score well.

That score is not just "kinda low" - it is rock bottom. She did really bad. :-(

The average for all kids who take the MCATs is about 27, and the average for all kids admitted to med school is about 30 - 31. the average for kids admitted to the prestigious schools is 35 to 37.

There is no way she is getting into med school unless she dramatically improves this score.

You can check the scores for kids admitted to med schools in the webpages at the website of the Association of American Medical Colleges AAMC and at a few of the online chat groups and websites for med school applicants. Maybe they will have some tips about how she can improve. I know that the premed kids I have met have been serious studying for MCATs for at least a whole year before they took them. How did she miss getting the message?

I hope she can turn things around. Good luck.
