I am currently looking up some good schools to apply to, and was wondering if anyone knew of any that have good programs in Art and Folkloristics/ Anthropology.

the type of art I want to do is 2D traditional art and maybe some visual design stuff.
I would like to see if I could mix folklore and art to bring back some traditional feeling to it.

What an interesting question!

There are several schools that have programs that combine folk themes and art. Boston College has a program in Irish studies that does that. And many state universities have interdisciplinary programs where you could work out something along these lines. I think you should look at University of Arizona, U New Mexico, UNC, and some of the California schools. Maybe one of the DC schools where there are all those museums around.

One way you might research this is to go to or write or email some of the art museums that focus on traditional art. There are lots of staff members at those institutitons who are doing what you might like to do. They might have some great advice about how to get qualified. Maybe you could get a summer internship at the Smithsonian or the Fields Museum, etc and get a handle on how to develop this interesting career notion.

Good luck. Have fun with it!

Might try a couple of the SUNY schools in New York?

Stony Brook
Fredonia
University of Buffalo

Kind of depends on what type of art you wish to pursue -- design or fine arts, art history. . . . not sure if you are looking to relate these two areas in your degree program or simply expressing interest in both areas.
