we are talking about cards and decorations. I say it is 50 and my boyfriend says it is 40.

You are over the hill when you believe you are over the hill.
I've seen people give up the ghost at 50 while some people are still going upward and onward into their 80's.

As far as cards and decorations, any round number could get "over the hill" since it is a way to tease someone that they are getting old even if they aren't. I would say the old jokes start at 30, but you are not really over the hill, it is just a joke. And if you want to know seriously, then it depends on the person. Middle age is in the 40's and 50's and then you can decide when over the hill is after that.

I am 52 and aside from slightly greying hair I look and feel exactly the same as I did when I was 30. (If I could go back in time and repeat the last 22 years without the mistakes, I would be much richer and contented than I am now)

I heard it was 40, but that's when people consider you are over the hill.
My dad is going on 54, and he acts like he'll never grow up. He doesn't think he's over the hill, so he's not. It just depends on your state of mind.
