Working on a friends comp. They can connect to the wireless connection but no further. I have connected to my own house connection but that is all I can do. She can connect at airports, etc, but cant get the internet. Any suggestions other than netsh, ipconfig/release?

First thing to determine is if your friends computer is getting an ip address - just run ipconfig - does the wireless port have an ip address assigned?

If not, figure out why. Make sure DHCP is configured on the wireless router.

What else is on the network besides the wireless router? What does the wireless router connect to? Do you know that the wireless router is getting an IP address from the service provider?

This isn't completely clear. What do you mean, she can connect at the airport but can't get to the internet? Does this mean she gets the internet at the airport but not at home. Or that she never gets the internet?

If you can get to the internet sometimes, but not with the home setup, the problem may lie between the router and the modem, or even with the signal coming in to the house.

Do some troubleshooting. If you hook directly to the modem with a wire (and reset the modem and the computer ip), can you get to the internet? If so, you have a good connection. Possibly your router is misconfigured. If not, check your modem or your incoming line.

You suggest that you can connect from your pc to the router. Make sure your pc's lan connection is set to obtain IP address automatically and to obtain DNS automatically.

Reboot modem and router and all downstream pcs.

Confirm this by first opening command prompt and entering ipconfig /all. You should be getting the LAN IP address of your wireless connection, subnet mask, and default gateway. Record these. The IP address and the default gateway should be 192.168.x.y where x = 0 or 1, y = 2 to 255; default gateway 192.168.x.1 in most home grade routers by system default. If the IP is 169.xxx.xxx.xxx where x is anything, you are not connected to the router and you need to go to router via wired connection and check the LAN configuration and make sure the security settings agree w the security settings you have on your pc. You need a valid LAN IP to proceed.

Now enter ping 192.168.x.1 (default gateway). You should receive 4 positive responses. If so, you are able to connect to router.

Now type in ping 4.2.2.2; you should get 4 responses; if not go on router and make sure WAN configuration is consistant with your ISP recommended setting. You must get 4 positive responses from ping 4.2.2.2.

Now type in ping yahoo.com. If you do not get 4 positive responses go on router and make sure the DNS settings are set per your ISP recommendation. You must receive 4 positive responses from ping yahoo.com. Once this is done you have internet.

Check to see if the router's DNS servers are updated/correct. Also make sure the DNS servers on the computer itself are correct, and not outdated static entries. Check to see if DHCP is enabled on the router. It might not be.
Also check to see if encryption is enabled on the router.
