USB 2.0 in Hi-Speed mode 480 Mbit/s
Ethernet 10/100/1000 Mbit/s
So if your Cable or DSL "modem" has an Ethernet port and a USB 2.0 port, the USB 2.0 port is faster, unless the Ethernet port is Gigabit.

It really should not matter as both USB and Ethernet are going to be faster than your cable ISP. Ethernet will use less CPU cycles so is probably the better solution. Standard Ethernet 10baseT is 10mbps while 100baseT is 100mbps. Contrast this with USB 2.0 which runs at max of 12mbps in full speed mode or 480mbps in high speed mode.

Interesting question but not really meaningful.
Ethernet typically runs at 100 Mbps, Gigabit ethernet runs at 1,000 Mbps. USB can run faster than 100 Mbps.
The fastest Cable Internet speed is about 10 Mbps or 1/10 of the speed of Ethernet.
So when it comes to modem connection (your words) it does not matter. The internet speed through the modem is the slow speed.

Ethernet is much faster than USB. However, depending on the application, this extra speed may not be noticable to the average user.
