There's enough ice to sink a liner and if I wait for it to naturally melt, it will be Christmas. The hair dryer is melting it goodo but it occurred to me that it might not be safe. Isn't there gas in those pipes in the freezer? Could it explode with the heat of the dryer since it is only used to cold? Would someone know about this and tell me, please? I don't know whether to post in the science section or the home and garden!

Done it a hundred times just make sure no water drips on the hair dryer. Another alternative is to boil water and place the pans inside the freezer and close the door for awhile

My parents do this whenever they defrost. Takes about half an hour. You need to make sure you don't get too close with the dryer, you don't want to damage your fridge, and you most certainly do not want to get water in contact with the business end of the dryer (the plug). If you keep it more or less on a level with the opening, you should be fine. My parents dryer is an old one and only has two settings, hot and hotter.

Turn the electric off. Put in a dish of boiling water and some lemon juice (deodorises the freezer as well) Keep scraping the ice out with a blunt tool

I've used both methods, the pots of hot water which take forever and the hair dryer which is faster. Just make sure that you just blast on the ice chunks and have plenty of towels and pots to wring the towels out close by. Have fun!

I'm sure this will be safe enough if you're careful but a tip I have is fill an emtpy milk jug with hot water and place this in your freezer, it certainly speeds up the defrosting process.

You can do it with the hair dryer safely. I've done it
As to the extreme amount of ice, my ex-wife had me defrost our freezer, and I kept finding leftover desserts that she had forgotten. She was a great little homemaker.

Well obviously you need to stop before the pipes get hot enough to explode....Once the ice is melting good it should fall off in chunks....you are fine doing it the way you are!.....Hope this helps:)

use a kettle. boil the kettle and set it inside the freezer, or you could also buy a steam shark, i use my shark to defrost my deep freezer and it takes me about 20 minutes to get really built up ice off and cleaned up. it is definitely worth the investment.

I'm sure it's safe. It'd just be like defrosting on a very hot day.
