Because it is a very serious chronic and debilitating illness. There is a theory that the Roman empire fell partly or mostly due to malaria, because everybody was too sick to do anything, fight wars, collect taxes, govern towns, what -have-you, and it all just "fell apart" as a result. You are able to ask such a cavalier question only because you live in an artificial bubble of modern civilization; when that bubble bursts, you WILL find out first hand what the "big fuss" was about a LOT of things!

Because its a major killer, common in many developing countries which don't have the infrastructure/money to deal with outbreaks, all the pesticides used which are effective are harmful to loads of other stuff including us (eg. DDT), antimalarials dont actually stop you getting the disease... they just suppress the symptoms (apparently. I found that out on my last trip to S'pore/malaysia. Made me wonder the exact point of taking them tbh... but all the nurses/websites were saying the same thing!!!) and once you have the disease you've got it for life. There isn't a cure, but you can take drugs which will supress the symptoms most of the time and you'll only have the odd outbreak (assuming you can afford medication.) Those who go untreated often die and the most vulnerable are under 5s if I remember rightly.
Answer the question? hehe x
