No way.

Would Gordon Brown have the private phone line of a council flat mum?

Would Margaret Beckett leave talks in Washington to call her?

No, is the answer to that.

When this story first broke I was totally in deep sympathy for the McCanns but as time's going on its becoming more apparent just how emotionless Gerry and Kate are. I agree that single parents or parent less fortunate than the McCanns would be crucified for leaving their children alone and probaly prosecuted. Social services would be called in and the twins would probably be taken into care. However, it has been suggested on many threads that people from council estates would leave their children without thinking of the consequences. I know many parents who live in council houses who would never dream of leaving their kids alone. I cannot understand what was going through the McCanns heads at the time!!! They were in a foreign country! A place they and their children did not know! It wasnt an area they or their children were familiar with. They are lucky they dont have three missing children and not just one. Sadly as time's going on I really dont think that Madeleine is still alive. If she is god only knows what she's been through. I think its time that her parents came home and gave the twins some sort of normality and stability and try to rebuild their lives because sadly I think they are only delaying the inevitable. I hope I am wrong but they will have to live with their guilt for the rest of their lives. God bless that wee babby wherever she is. Lets hope the angels are watching over her x

This point has been mentioned so many times on here. I didn't believe it the first time I read it and I don't believe it now. I maintain that the main reason that the media are not criticising the McCanns - apart from the fact that to waste time censuring them is to overlook the criminal actions of the abductor - is that they are already being severely punished for their actions.

I'm really fed up reading about how dreadful the McCanns are. What about the person or person who took her? - and there is no credible basis from what has been reported to suspect Gerry & Kate McCann themselves.

To all the commentators on this issue, I say this. If you are "on Madeleine's side" then you should be reserving your venom for whoever took her away.

I would agree with KERRY S If she had been a single mother the press would have slaughtered her.Although I have sympathy with the youngster I have to question the actions of the parents.I have 3 daughters and now they are between 33/38 and I have to say that when they were young they went everywhere with us and if that meant they came to the resteraunt then they came and my wife and I went home when the children were ready and even now my grandchildren still phone and ask if they can come out with me for a drink but even at 18 I still make sure they get home OK.Probably that is why they are now well adjusted kids even though my wife and I split.(But we are still friends)My feeling is the McAnns were totally selfish in doing what they did especially when you think 10 metres away was a creche which they could have used if they wanted to have a night together ALONE.And if the cost was prohibitive then take them out with you or stay in.I was ALWAYS taught as a youngster that when you have children YOU AND NO ONE ELSE IS RESPONSIBLE FOR THEM.If you want to go out canoodling DONT HAVE KIDS.In my view if justice were served then the young girl would be found safe and her and the other two children would be taken from the Mcanns and put with a family who did care because in my eyes their pleasure came before their family.Once again MEDIA HYPE has taken over and everyone is looking at the child and not at the parents wrongdoings. If my view seems harsh then so be it and I don't care but as adults with children you are the one who is responsible and in todays society(perverted as it is) as an adult you are the one who has got to think not the child. If you come back to the original question then look in todays newspaper(FRIDAY) and you will see where a guy is being considered to be sent to prison by the judge for leaving hs daughter alone and GOING to work and that despite the child not being harmed and the same age as the Mcann's daughter although I have to say HE WAS WRONG TOO IN DOING WHAT HE DID.

We would have never known about it. It happens all the time but we never hear anything about it. Parents would be to distraught anyway not like Gerry and Kate McCann lapping up as much attention as they can get. It's Madeleine I feel sorry for. Madeleine and the twins should never has been neglected in the first place. I wouldn't even dream of doing anything like that myself. I have no sympathy for them at all.

No, a single Parent wouldnt get the same amount of sympathy or coverage. Not only because the press wouldve slaughtered them by now, but because they wouldnt have the "clout" to get politicians etc to back them like the McCanns have.
The McCanns have deliberately surrounded themselves with people they KNOW will protect them, and all these Events, Balloon releases etc are a clever ploy to keep THEMSELVES in the public eye, for their own gain.

A Portugese proverb says " No te sorprenda que grite quien más tiene por qué callar”.
Don’t be surprised. He who has most reasons to keep quiet is often the one who shouts most.

This is of course, a hypothetical question. The parents in this case have the courage to step out and demand coverage.
Would a single mother have the same capabilities? Maybe not.

No. She would have been labelled as a feckless mother. And yes I have a lot of sympathy for the McCanns, but they should not have left their three children unattended.

ben needhams mother was single and also a teen mum and more than a decade later people still talk about him and id recognise her face anywhere

jamie bulgers mother was from a council estate and again id recognise her face anywhere and any picture of her son also

the fact is madeleines parents have pushed for publicity because they know if her name isnt out there and people forget her shes as good as dead

i actually think if kate was a single mother from a council estate people wold be more forgiving like because they have money and intellectual jobs they should know better

yes they messed up big time maybe thats why theyre pushing that bit harder a little bit of guilt the fact is people act as if the amount of press coverage is the mccanns fault i very much doubt gerry or kate have been down to canary wharf lately pointing guns to the heads of editors of newspapers if your angry at anybody it should be the press they control the amount of coverage things get

I totallly agree with you. There's no way she would be getting the same amount of support. She would be getting called a bad mother and heaven knows what else.
