The following article appeared in The Mercury newspaper on October 30, 2002.

Sri Lankan widower breastfeeds his babies

Colombo - A 38-year-old Sri Lankan man, whose wife had died three months ago, appears to have the ability to breastfeed his two infant daughters, doctors said on Wednesday.

The man, from the central town of Walapone, lost his wife during childbirth.

"My eldest daughter refused to be fed with powdered milk liquid in the feeding bottle.

"I was so moved one evening and to stop her crying I offered my breast. I then realised that I was capable of breastfeeding her," the man admitted.

Dr Kamal Jayasinghe, deputy director of a Sri Lankan government hospital, was quoted as saying it was possible for men to produce milk if the prolactine hormone became hyperactive. - Sapa-AFP

Well I would have said it was impossible until I went through your links... I am in a state of shock... It still seems contrary to the laws of nature itself. I don't rightly know what to say.

I would imagine that it would be considerate for one to remove the chest hairs before one try. And I would also imagine that there just wouldn't be much volume present in the male breast.

I had wondered about what the experience of breastfeeding was all about. It seemed like that was a very exclusively female world. This makes me wonder about other possibilities of men sharing in their wife's world. What's so great about getting your fingernails painted? And why do woman work so hard with getting their make-up just right? What's the experience proms, formals and other other special occasion dresses all about? Are these mysteries open for male participation?

Of course it is possible, men have breast(itty bitty little tiny ones we just call them pecs), men have nipples(again itty bitty ones), men have mammary glands (that usually stay inactive). You learn that is high school health class.
But I defiantly would find it strange to see a man in public breastfeeding.

** had to add this for the people who don't know the human body

The phenomenon of male lactation in humans has become more common in recent years due to the use of medications that stimulate a man's mammary glands. Though boys and men have nipples, many are unaware that they also have mammary glands. Ordinarily there is so little mammary tissue that it is unnoticeable; if the male breasts develop visibly, the condition is called gynecomastia. Under the appropriate hormonal stimulus—that nature provides to human females when they become pregnant and give birth—the mammary glands of human males can also produce milk. The volume of milk produced is low relative to that of a lactating female. Male lactation has, in some cases, commenced without hormonal treatments as well.[citation needed] Newborn baby boys (and girls) can occasionally produce milk because of the intense hormones involved in their mother's pregnancy and the hours of childbirth; this is called witch's milk.

Yes absolutely men have the same equipment as women.

And I think of it as one of nature's forms of backup.

I dont think they have the STUFF, but there are pills that can give men breasts. Those HORMONE pills. Some men who have BECOME women, can take pills to give thenselves REAL Boobs, I suppose if they have already gone thru hormone replacement and then take pills to lactate, then yes, i guess it might be possible

being open minded has nothing to do with this topic!
Men lack the "equipment" to breastfeed.

i think it is physically impossible. i don't think it is about being open-minded. if science figures out a way for them to do it, then fantastic.
