well, don't buy toys. they will just be sitting around the parents house for months until the baby is old enough to play with them. we got a lot of things at our shower. diaper bag, diapers, baby bath. get a lot of the little necessities that you would use on an everyday basis and the parents will love it. like a little hairbrush kit, nose suckers, thermometers, i love the bedtime baby bath it smells so good. good luck.

The essentials are always great! Diapers and formula especially. I wouldn't go with clothes or things of that nature. I received sooooo many outfits, socks, caps etc and a lot did not fit my son. Everyone thought I would have a small baby being that I am 5'0" but I ended up delivering a 9 pound baby boy that was 22 inches long. He didn't fit in his newborn clothes. I ended up giving them all away. I wouldn't give a diaper bad either. I had already bought the one that I loved but still ended up with about 5 more. One gift that I couldn't live without is my son's bouncy seat. It's made by Boppy and has a vibrating feature. He loves this and takes most of his naps in it. I don't know what I would do without it.
I hope you find something you and your friend will love.

We are going to agree with a lot of the other answerer's. The basics are very practical and appreciated. Lora, and I liked and used, diapers, desitin for diaper rash prevention, baby wipes, baby lotion, etc.... Like someone said previously it is nice to know that you have supplies at home.
We agree that socks, creepers, bibs, onesies, shoes, and toys are not the best. The parents will get a lot of those from other people, and they will also buy them themselves.
If you are thinking more long term then perhaps pacifiers, teething rings/sticks, or maybe even a musical rotating mobile for the crib to help the little one sleep.
One last thing, if you want to go up to like 80 or 100 dollars, you could get them a car seat or a baby monitor. If they don't have a car seat, it is great to give, so they can bring the baby home. Like us if they have a car seat already, a second one is also very practical, they could put it in their second car if they have one, or they could give it/share it among the grandparents. Trust us not always having to move the seat from car to car is a big help. Our baby monitor was awesome, it helped us get a bit more sleep/ and do more things during the day, by not having to or feeling like we should check on our little one very often. It also gave us more peace of mind that she was safe.
Best wishes to you and to your friends. We hope that the baby is healthy and strong.

A good neutral colored diaper bag.. We got an Eddie Bauer navy blue/suede diaper bag for under $50 and I used it for my hospital bag and a diaper bag for my two boys ages 1 and 3.. It looks good, my husband doesn't mind carrying it and it should get many more yrs. of use as the boys get older...
Also, a digital thermometer, any teething supplies (orajel, teethers) and baby tylenol because you can truly never find it when you need it...
I also got the baby basics shampoo/soap, diaper rash ointment and I'm still using some that I got as gifts 3 yrs. ago.. Also, the generic one's are just as good...
My mother in law makes cloth baby diapers, I used them as drool catchers, burpies etc... They are made of soft brushed cotton.. I love them ! If you dont' get anything like that.. .Get some microfiber cleaning clothes.. .$4 for 12 wonderful for wiping down baby, bathing baby and cleaning the house.. I use one to take my make-up off w/o soap...
A nice good quality umbrella or lightweight stroller... Very nice to have instead of lugging around the baby travel system..
Well, that should do..Good luck

For me the personalized items were the most rewarding. It wasn't so much about what it was, but that it was more from the heart than just store bought. I mean, don't get me wrong, everything helps, but it's always that extra special thing with the gift that goes a long way! Good luck.

I know diapers came in handy maybe a sie 1. You can never have enough. Then you can get a cute outfit, or the baby washing powder,or a toy.. But diapers is a perfect gift. At my babyshower if you bought a pack of diapers you were entered into a raffle to win a picnic basket that contained crakers, salami, cheese, olives, cookies, candy, cloth napkins and wine glasses.

Something people usually never think of giving at a baby shower and that I found ever so useful is the mirror that you place in the back seat so you can see your back-facing baby while you drive. I wish I'd received one at my shower. I went out and got one. Every mother that gets into my car wants one after. And guess what...it's within your budget!

Everyone has said it! DIAPERS! My favorite was a wicker basket of diapers, wipes, soap, bibs, and laundry detergent. It was a blessing that we didn't have to buy diapers for the first 5 months! Everyone gave all sizes. It was MOST helpful!

I could not live (and neither could my baby) without my Boppy pillow! For the nursing pillow and a super-cute cover, it comes to almost $30.00. I don't know how women nurse without it.
I also give my friends a book: The Nursing Mother's Companion Guide, it's absolutely invaluable and one of the best presents that I ever got.
