I questioned whether there was a way to keep a car from rusting anymore than it already is.

and found a post on yahoo answers saying:

"Stop it with RustSeal made by KBS Coatings. It's a super tough nonporous coating that permanently seals metal pores and blocks all access to water & oxygen. Unbelievable stuff! I've used it.

Is this just shamless self promotion or are there really products that can stop and even prevent further rust?

It's good stuff but you must follow the directions to the letter. by preparing the surface and making sure it's clean.

Yes there are products that bond with rust and stop the spread. I have also used zero rust on frames when I am rebuilding Jeeps. It works good as long as you can remove the surface rust and clean with something like Acetone before applying. The link for the stuff I use is http://www.jcwhitney.com/autoparts/Search?catalogId=10101&storeId=10101&sku=10775g

good luck

http://www.por15.com/
Another rust sealer type product---don't know about RustSeal but with POR15, you have to coat any and all rust areas to seal out any oxygen from continuing the rust process. As long as no oxygen gets to the metal, no more rust but it has microscopically small molecules so it's critical to seal it well.
