You need a router.
This is a device that makes it look like you have a single device attached to your DSL, but actually allows you to connect many computers.
If your laptop has a WiFi wirless adapter then get a wireless router. All of them will have four or more wired connections for your desktop but you will be able to use the laptop anywhere within 50 to 100 feet of the router.
You unplug the cable that runs from the DSL modem to your computer from the DSL modem. Plug that cable into one of the LAN ports of the router. Take the cable that came with the router and plug that into the WAN port of the router and into the DSL modem.
Run the software that came with the router and you should be good to go on the desktop.
On the laptop, for wired you will need another Ethernet cable. Plug that into the Ethernet connector on the laptop (Like a phone connector but wider) and the other end into another of the LAN ports on the router.
For wireless, your system should automatically see the wireless network and ask if it is O.K. to connect.
If not, then go Control Panel > Network Connections. There should be an icon for your wireless adapter. Right click on that and then click on View Available Wireless Networks. If you do not recognise the name it should be the one with the strongest signal.

You will need to get a router which will cost you about $20-$50 depending on quality. You hook up your DSL line to the router, and you can have several ethernet cables running out of the router for several different computers.

well, if your computer is connected to a dsl router or line, then your laptop can detect it. Just open up "Local Area Connection" on the lower right task bar and have it connect with your computer. usually laptops should be able to detect routers if you are within 100-200 feet. I dunno, but mines can.
Or you can try "my network places" and add the dsl line to your laptop so that way, it can detect the router. I hope this helps ya.

You gotta hook up a router to your dsl modem and that way you can have more than one computer on the Internet.
Probably go with a wireless router.
