Music books with songs that are familiar to your son and with those guitar chords on the top in a box can help you at least learn chords. The dots in the box are for finger placement. The top line indicates the square right below the bridge on the top of the fretboard. He can figure out the rythym of the song if he knows it and strum along. #1 is your pointy finger and then the rest of the numbers are all the fingers that follow until you get to #4 which is the pinky. The music store will tell you which book is best, I think.

Your son will enjoy the guitar more if he is playing music he likes. Buy him some guitar TAB books from your local guitar shop of his favourite guitar band's songs. TAB is far easier to read than traditional visual pitch music and can be learned by anyone in a short time. He could back this up with occasional lessons from a proper tutor, but the best way to learn a guitar is to just explore it.
Also try Total Guitar, a great magazine with real contemporary music printed both in TAB and visual pitch, and with a CD where session musicians play the music how it ought to sound. This speeds up the learning process.

Gog to Guitar Center or Sam Ash and buy him some beginner guitar books. First...he needs to learn how to tune the guitar...then he'll learn how to play real simple chords and basic notes. Some of those books are like $5 seriously if you look real good in the magazine racks. Also, get some extra picks and strings too. Doesn't have to be real fancy...just enough to get the job done...good luck!

Any books on music theory will help him develop as a guitarist... though boring, knowing theory will open so many doors, other instruments, different styles, etc. Let him pick out a couple maybe...
I would strongly suggest lessons if you don't think he wants to go it alone... Having friends and/or motivation to play with really helps.

I don't know, but google like guitar books for beginners, ask people you know how play guitar, check your local library, listening to music featuring guitar (solos) would be useful as well i guess.
But be hopeful, he'll get better, Ryan Cabrera: pop/rock musician didn't know how to learn guitar and taught himself at a young age. There's hope.

Spend a little money for a couple of basic lessons and let the instructor pick out the books and give your son a lesson plan...

go to wal-mart and buy one of those first act books. You can find it in the toy aisle. It's how I learned. If you want you can buy him the whole toy guitar and take small steps.

he needs to learn the base chords first, show him this turn around to start with, its good practice.
C Am F G. they are easy chords to start with as your fingers dont have to move that much. tell him to play the chords in that order, there are hundreds of songs written with them 4 chords.
