The brake pads on my 1989 Ford Escort LX are worn out. Roughly, how much will it cost to replace them?

It shouldn't be more than $100, if it's just the pads. If it's been a long time, and the rotors/drums need replacing, you'll be going up from there. If you take it to a shop, it'll be more because they'll charge labor, too.

Cheapies cost $15.00 - $20.00 they have no warranty on the amount of time that will last. I take it you do not want to spend any excess money on a car this old. It probably needs brake rotors. Off -shore rotors cost $22.00 each for your car Top shelf American or Canadian parts will run $40. - $50.00 each but will outlive the Chinese parts 2 - 3 times longer. The life expectancy of the rotors made in China is two yrs. at best. The metallurgy properties is simply terrible. They rust corrode and warp in an eye wink. A competent independent mechanic will charge $200. - $260. using the Chinese parts. good middle of the line ceramic pads will run $40.00.

Pads are easy and it shouldnt cost much if you have not damaged the brake rotors.
I dont know the labor rates in your area but I would guess to swap the front pads should cost around $100.

The rear pads/ shoes usually last much longer than the front so it may not be necessary to change the back ones.

usually pads will run you anywhere from $20 to $100 per axel. being a small americal car they will be toward the cheaper side of the scale. and about an hour labor to change them out.

My business charges $65.oo per hour, but I am also the least expensive in the area...
