All you can do is treat the symptoms. Your body fights off the cold. Treat the sneezing, coughing, congestion, drink plenty of fluids, stay warm, and get plenty of rest.

I treat my colds with lots of respect because if I don't they'll knock me on my a $ $. LOL
I try to get plenty of rest (hard to do with 2 kids running around) and drink lots of water, Gatorade, etc (stay hydrated) and chicken soup or broth (it doesn't help the cold get better faster, but it just makes you feel better)
Try taking Echinacea when you first start feeling badly, like a cold is about to start, it's suppose to help give your immune system a boost. I take it and it seems that my colds just don't last as long as they use to.

Be sure to drink plenty of fluids including water and fruit juices. You may have a fever and run the risk of dehydration if you do not get additional fluids to replace those you lose. Additional fluids will also help to loosen nasal and respiratory secretions.
Try to eat a balanced diet. Softer foods will help if you have a sore throat. Many people swear by that old stand-by for colds and flu - chicken soup.

Of the answers you have received so far, Lady Bug comes the closest to my own treatment. Not everyone can, but if you have no alergic reactions to aspirin, then consider adding it to your regime. I take asprin, plenty fluids (mostly water) and get plenty of rest. Since the cold *virus* actually is one of many that cause the same symtoms, there is no one sure cure and medical science will admit this if you bother to ask. Usually a person that is of reasonablly good health can expect to recover in a few days or they can go to a doctor, and recover in a few days. See, care, no care, same outcome, recover in a few days, but you will not spend a lot of bucks to find out that the doctor cannot help you.
Luck to you ;)

You let a cold run it's course. I feel that all those over the counter medicines are garbage but I do things to soothe my cold instead. I usually drink hot cocoa, drink lots of water, and eat Campbell's Chicken Noodle Soup. Hope I helped. Good luck on your quest!

zinc, vitamin c, rest and fluids. chicken soup actually is a benefit, but the old adage goes, feed a cold, starve a fever, this will be around for about 10 days, sorry, however, my last summer cold lasted for about 3 weeks.

Drink lots of water, have some soup, get a nice comfy bed made on the couch, and watch cartoon marathons all day.
