Rebates is what they send you once you get the phone. Sometimes it is cash (check) and sometimes it is a debit card.

As an example, lets say you were looking at phone that is $50 after $50 rebate. That means you have to first PAY $100 and then send in paperwork to get your rebate. The rebate can take two months to process! If you go this route make sure you make copies of everything!

rebate: a partial refund following a purchase

When you purchase an item a store may give you an instant rebate which means taking a portion of the price off like a coupon at the time of purchase. Sometimes it is a "mail in" rebate where you have to fill out a form or sign on the receipt and mail in the original receipt and you get a check back for the amount of the rebate. Note this can take weeks. When purchasing a phone, often times you will get the rebate right there at the register. You need to ask if it's instant rebates and when they apply. I know Sprint has customers qualify for differing amounts of rebates depending on how far into their contract they are. It depends on who you go with.

it means when u buy a phone u most times pay a certain price then they give u a rebate form to fill out and mail to the company and u get it withn in 6-8 weeks later so if u buy a phone that say its $49.99 after rebates u might get a $50 rebate or $100 depending on phone so u would pay the $99.99 or $149.99 that day and get the rebate within the 6-8 weeks later.

It is the final cost AFTER you send in the rebates. If the item is originally $70 and is $45 after rebates, you need to send in a your receipt and the form supplied to you either by the retailer or in the box that contained your product. If you send it in, you may have to wait 6-8 weeks for the rebate to get mailed in to you.
