Printer Share is off by default on more modern Windows, but easily on, there is a Workgroup or Domain name in Control Panel -> System, make sure desktop's and laptop's match, and thus basic Microsoft SMB/LAN Manager network functions (this is NOT MSN).

Go to Printer/Fax folder of desk, right-click and "Sharing..." on the icon representing the printer, it would prompt you for a name to share it under.

Go to Printer/Fax folder of laptop, right-click and "Add..." on the empty window. A Wizard will take care of the rest, it'll prompt for an XP driver somewhere with the line because the other computer is not XP.

You need to add your printer as a shared printer on your host computer (98). Then, when you laptop connects to the network, open the printers and faxes pages (start - printers and faxes) and add a printer. Then, as XP walks you through it, choose that the printer is a network printer. If it doesn't recognize the printer, you may need to add it manually. Choose a network location and then type \\server\printer name with server being the host name of the 98 computer and printer name being whatever the printer is called on that computer. Hope this helps.
